Ducks everywhere!


I've always fancied a pair of those concrete lions on the gateposts, this doesn't quite have the same effect I feel....

Here we are coming up for week 3 I think and the ducklings are growing like weeds.  We have 14 now having lost two.  We almost lost three after a rather traumatic run in with a cat who grabbed one as I went out to feed them.  I screamed, it ran and we assumed duckling had died.  Transpired the little guy had made his escape when I screamed and plopped back in the pond, meanwhile us and several other neighbours were scouring gardens looking for him.

Anyway, it's fair to say this clutch are utterly bonkers.  Previous ducklings have stayed pretty close to Egwina's side for safety, and thats exactly what a little duck should do.  This lot love nothing more than to scatter to every side of the pond leaving mum in the middle quacking loudly trying to regroup them.  They are everywhere and seemingly have no fear at all.

Our goose problem seems to have resolved itself.  We now just have the occasional overnight stay and no more attempts by them to nest so thats a huge relief.  We also have a second pair of adults who we think are trying to nest but are repeatedly run out of the water by Duncan.  Hopefully the situation will calm and they will be allowed to stay.

Now the geese are gone I can think about starting the garden jobs I need to do.  The grass has needed cutting for a while but as geese love nothing more than freshly cut grass I put off doing it.  Now all I need is the weather!

  Back in February 2017 I was idly browsing Right Move with a mug of tea. Steve and I had talked of moving but not really with any conviction. Then I saw Pond House listed. The next morning we hopped in the car and drove the mile from our current home to have a look. It was unexpected to say the least, a modern late 90's Cul De Sac and then at the end Pond House. The estate agent photos couldn't really convey the size of the pond. Coming in at around 122ft x 130ft it was, as our daughter exclaimed, not a pond but "A bloody lake!" A look back at warmer days.

  Warm sunny days messing around in boats.  I really miss those. This was taken back at the end of September when the weather was unseasonably mild.  We had cut down the grasses around the edge of the pond to help them grow back better in the spring.  I was lazily floating around under the guise of weeding out decaying waterlilys,  but truth be told I was probably relaxing in the motion and enjoying the sunshine.  I can't row anyway, unless around in one large circle counts.... The water level today is now about an inch below the wooden board you can see on the front of the pier.  I don't think I appreciate just how much it does rise over the winter months until there is a physical marker to compare it. When we checked this morning the last of our winter ducklings have flown the nest. Welcome to February!

  Finally the 1398 days of January are over and I can start looking forward to spring again.  The pond is starting to defrost and happily the heavy snow forecast for today didn't hit us.  This means we have  four ducks happy to be home.  Weirdly we also have a seagull who is identifying as a duck.  I have no idea why but he's spent all day like this, he's even come over with the others for food...  Who am I to judge? Meanwhile on the duck front, courtship rituals are in place.  The 2 males are getting antsy and scrapping a bit whilst the females look on with a kind of 'here we go again' expression.  Hopefully they will tolerate each other and there wont be feathers flying. What this has made me realise is I need to get my arse in gear and sort the existing duck house before they start to nest.  It needs to be hauled out and have new polystyrene under it to help it float.  It's a quick job, but with the pond being froz...
