March draws to a close
It's safe to say that here at Pond House everything is either scrapping or shagging. The Geese are still coming and going but happily showing no signs of nesting here which is a relief. Meanwhile, the best news is Egwina is on eggs! She's settled back into her routine of coming out in the evening, stretching her wings, having a wash and then sitting on the doormat shouting loudly to be fed. You can pretty much set a watch by her now. Exciting times.
In frog news they seem to be absolutely everywhere at present. I'm not a fan of frogs at all really so this time of the year is tricky for me. They come out first thing in a morning and last thing at night and cover the drives and pathways. We've run over several and do every year, you simply cant see them. Disgustingly the magpies and crows make pretty short work of any dead frogs (boak). There are also many on the back patio as well as toads. Last year my daughters visiting sausage dog came flying in the house foaming at the mouth after an incident with a toad. He was a pup and had licked it...... fortunately he was ok, but I hadn't realised toads were poisonous and can cause severe illness and death to a curious dog. Lesson learned. Sausages are supervised! My own dog Murphy has no interest in them at all thankfully.
Even the birds are currently fighting. I witnessed an epic scrap between a magpie and a wood pigeon the other day which resulted in wood pigeon losing a good chunk of his tail feathers, mid flight.
More good news is the resident bats have awakened and are dipping the pond for insects at night. Always happy to see them return. very special creatures.
So as we move into April things should start to settle, the sun is shining and everything is alive out there. Wonderful!

The visiting hedgehog is on the move, that's all the wildlife I've seen. I know there are frogs out there but they keep themselves to themselves except when they don't and make me shriek.
ReplyDeleteI've not seen our Hedgehog yet this year, hoping he's ok, especially as we've seen a badger in the area and they will ear a little hog.
DeleteI shriek as well, they are usually behind where I store plant pots or under something I'm moving and jump out at me.
